What is Google Alphabet and What does it Mean?
Google Alphabet is something we’ve heard of for a while now, but there’s probably still some misunderstanding as to how it all works and what it might mean to SEO’s and businesses out there – as well as the future of Google and what we can expect next from the company. Here’s a quick introduction and explanation of what’s going on and why, realistically, it can only mean good things.
What is it?
Alphabet is essentially a parent company – an umbrella company that will operate separately to Google, and take into consideration a lot of other smaller companies under one roof. It is basically about restructuring, and slimming down the company to ensure resources are put in the right areas. It does mean that extraneous research projects, such as high altitude balloons or autonomous cars, are scrapped for now – but this will allow the company to focus on its predominant internet based operations.
What does it mean?
Restructuring essentially means that sections and personnel within Google itself will be freed up from the day to day running of the company. Not least Google’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Google has always been about innovation, development and radically changing the way we think online.
Does it change what I do?
One key message Google are trying to push out here is that, at this stage, there shouldn’t be any changes to product. There is simply no reason to shake the ‘roadmap’ that Google have been on up – current iterations of products and services have been good money makers for the company and there is unlikely to be a change of direction for at least 18 months. After that, however, there may be some changes that come about due to the restructuring of the company – new services and innovations that are result of a more focused, streamlined Google.
How will it affect my business?
If you are currently dependant on Google, natural search and the online relationship you have with your customers, you can be assured that things are not about to change – and in fact further down the line they might actually be improved. Business wise one thing that may change is on Wall Street – shareholders and investors will now have a much clearer idea on where Google spend their money and why.
Google Alphabet marks the start of a new beginning for Google – and potentially more significantly – marks the start of a new phase of internet development and use. Alphabet means that one of the largest companies in the world can start looking at what’s next for the internet in general – and that’s likely to have big repercussions further down the line. For now, nothing is set to change, but there some exciting things to look forward to and there’s no time like the present to get planning.
